Spain 2008: Madrid Metro
The Madrid Metro is a metro system serving the city of Madrid, capital of Spain. The system is the sixth longest metro in the world after London, New York, Moscow, Seoul and Shanghai, though Madrid is approximately the fiftieth most populous metropolitan area in the world. Its fast growth in the last 20 years has also put it among the fastest growing networks in the world, rivaled by the Shanghai Metro or the Beijing Subway. Unlike normal Spanish road and rail traffic, Madrid Metro trains use left-hand running on all lines due to historical reasons.
The Madrid metro is indispensible to the tourist in Madrid - the perfect way to avoid the city's endless traffic congestion. On your first day in the city, I'd recommend using a Hop-On-Hop-Off Sightseeing Tour Bus, but after that the metro should be your preferred mode of transport. It runs until 1am, after which night buses run along the same routes as the metro.
